Terms of service.

Read what we publish, use it, quote it, argue with it. Don't impersonate us, don't scrape the site aggressively, and don't treat our economic projections as financial advice. Donations are voluntary, recurring billing is never enabled by default, and our positions are not for sale. This page is the long version of that.

1. Who we are

The Intelligent Party operates this website at intelligent-party.org. We are a political organization in the process of formal registration (likely jurisdiction: Ohio, with Delaware under consideration). Where this document refers to "we," "us," or "the Party," it refers to The Intelligent Party as an organization and its agents.

2. Permission to use what we publish

We want our arguments read. Permission is granted to:

  • Quote, excerpt, and cite any essay, position statement, or page on this site, for any purpose, with attribution.
  • Link to any page on the site.
  • Reproduce short excerpts (up to about 250 words) for non-commercial purposes without further permission.

Permission is not granted to:

  • Reproduce essays or position statements in full in commercial publications without written permission.
  • Republish content as if it originated elsewhere.
  • Use our name, logo, or mark to imply endorsement of products, candidates, or services we haven't endorsed.

If you want to do something not covered above, email contact@intelligent-party.org. We're generally permissive.

3. Your content

When you submit content to us — Alignment quiz answers, Contact messages, disagreement reasons on Position votes — you grant us a non-exclusive, royalty-free license to use that content to do the work of the Party: improving positions, publishing aggregate analyses, responding to you, and operating the site. We don't sell your content. We don't publish individual contact messages without your explicit permission.

4. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • Send us spam, harassing, or abusive content through any form on the site.
  • Attempt to access administrative functions, other users' data, or our internal systems without authorization.
  • Scrape the site at rates that materially impact its operation, or in violation of our robots.txt.
  • Impersonate the Party, its founders, its members, or anyone else.
  • Use the site to violate any law that applies to you.

We may remove content and block accounts that violate these terms.

5. Donations

Donations are voluntary contributions. By donating, you affirm that:

  • Your contribution is being made from your own funds, not as a conduit for someone else's money.
  • You are eligible to make a political contribution under federal and state law that applies to you.
  • You understand that political donations are not tax-deductible as charitable contributions.

Our commitments to you on donations:

  • Recurring billing is never enabled by default. If you want to set up a recurring contribution, you have to actively choose that option at checkout. We will never pre-check a recurring-billing box.
  • Receipts are emailed automatically. If you don't receive one within 24 hours, contact us.
  • Refunds: if you contributed in error, contact us within 30 days and we'll process a refund. After 30 days, refunds are at our discretion.
  • Donor records are retained as a matter of policy and legal compliance. Political-money records are held separately, on the record, accountable — for at least the seven years required by financial regulations and, in most cases, indefinitely. Donation records appear in any data-export request the donor makes but are exempt from deletion requests.
  • Donations do not buy positions. Our positions are determined by evidence and argument, not by who donates. We accept legal donations from anyone — including corporations, when legally permitted — but accepting a donation does not constitute any commitment to align with the donor's preferences. Donors who want to influence policy can do so by making the argument; the form is the same as for anyone else.

6. Predictions and projections

The site publishes:

  • Dated predictions about political and economic developments.
  • Economic projections under various scenarios.
  • Position statements advocating specific policies.
  • Essays arguing for those positions.

All of this is political commentary and political opinion. It is not:

  • Financial advice. Do not make investment decisions based on our projections.
  • Legal advice. Do not make legal decisions based on our policy descriptions.
  • Tax advice. Do not file your taxes based on what we publish.
  • Medical advice.

Predictions may turn out to be wrong. When they do, the record stays up — we don't memory-hole things we got wrong. That's the deal we make with readers.

7. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law:

  • The site is provided "as is" without warranty of any kind, express or implied.
  • We are not liable for damages arising from your use of the site, our content, or our predictions.
  • Our total liability to any user for any cause of action is limited to the amount that user has donated to us in the preceding 12 months (if any).

8. Changes to these terms

If we change these terms materially, we update the date at the top and post a brief note explaining what changed. Continued use of the site after a material change means you accept the updated terms.

9. Governing law and disputes

This agreement is governed by the laws of the State of Ohio without regard to its conflict-of-laws provisions. Disputes arising from your use of the site should be raised first by emailing contact@intelligent-party.org — we resolve almost everything that way. Formal disputes are subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the state and federal courts located in Ohio.

10. Contact

  • General questions: contact@intelligent-party.org
  • Privacy-specific questions: privacy@intelligent-party.org
  • Legal notices: contact@intelligent-party.org (until we have a registered agent on file)
